THE THINKING ENVIRONMENT?
The quality of everything we do depends on the quality of the thinking we do first. Or, to put it another way, what we think is what we get!
So if you're looking to take your performance up a number of levels, then you need really High Quality Thinking. And one of the most powerful tools around for transforming the way you think is The Thinking Environment.
THINKING FOR YOURSELF
Quality thinking time is usually in short supply. Too often we fall back on what we believe others think or what we believe we ought to think. Yet the quality and creativity of our decisions and our lives is defined by our ability to think for ourselves.
The Thinking Environment teaches you to do just that. Developed by Nancy Kline (and encapsulated in her book Time To Think) to create an environment in which people can think freely and deeply for themselves, this seemingly simple process can unleash the tremendous power of independent thought.
QUALITY CHANGE
Through the Thinking Environment you can create breakthrough thinking for yourself, your colleagues and clients.
The model works because it is firmly grounded in giving the highest quality of attention, appreciation and respect to people, allowing them to explore and recognise their own thoughts, feelings and assumptions. They can then move on and create their own solutions and future actions with greater scope and effectiveness.
If you want to:
- improve the quality of your thinking
- think independently for yourself
-
achieve excellence in communication
-
help colleagues and clients produce more and better ideas
-
discover a powerful tool for management and self-development

THE BASIC THINKING ENVIRONMENT PROCESS
The Thinking Environment is an environment of trust and confidentiality in which a person can feel able to think freely and deeply for themselves.
There are four stages to this thinking process which run smoothly from one to the next or back again.
STAGE 1: FREE EXPLORATION
The Thinker allows their thoughts to roam freely over all the subjects that come to mind. Because there are no interruptions, their mind can travel widely, discovering new, fresh insights and reaching new depths.
STAGE 2: SESSION GOAL
The Thinker decides what more they would like to achieve
in the session
STAGE 3: FINDING THE LIMITING ASSUMPTIONS
This is discovering the assumptions being made by the Thinker which are standing in the way of achieving their goal.
STAGE 4: REMOVING THE LIMITING ASSUMPTION
This helps the Thinker break free of limiting assumptions, and enables them to see what life would be like having achieved their goal or to set a clear path to achieving that goal.
The Thinking Environment model provides the Thinker with a framework in which to think for themselves, and such thought is powerful beyond measure for the Thinker because it is theirs. read more
GIVING ATTENTION THE SECRET OF SUCCESS
One of the biggest problems in communication is the quality of the listening or attention going on. People have their own agendas, even when they need to gather information from another person. Assuming you know what a person is going to say (for example, finishing their sentences for them) and cutting across them, leaves you never knowing what they were going to tell you and never understanding what they are thinking.
Giving quality attention is the route to understanding and knowledge.
The key elements of high quality listening are:
- getting the environment right
- giving close attention and
-
not interrupting.
To give someone the gift of listening to them with all three of these key elements in place is the most satisfying and rewarding experience you can have. It not only honours you it gives you a depth of information that otherwise you would miss; and it honours them giving them a quality of thinking that otherwise they would not have had. And you can learn how to give quality attention. read more
